The characters from one of the most beloved and well-read comic strips comes to life when Lindsay Little Theatre presents Snoopy! the Musical.
The show opens Friday, April 18 at the community theatre group’s studio at 55 George St. in Lindsay and continues its run for three consecutive weekends. All show times are 7:30 p.m.
Long-time Lindsay Little Theatre member Rob Powell said the company chose the production for many reasons.
“It’s a fairly small cast and, with the many different skits and vignettes with music, the pace is fairly lively. That makes for a fun environment,” said Mr. Powell, adding there is also quite a bit of diversity in the show. “It’s got something for kids, but it’s also got some humour that’s for adults. So it’s a real family show.”
Directing the production has also been a bit of deja vu for Mr. Powell. He was in the cast when his high school launched the show and has always enjoyed the music and stories from the play.
“We don’t always gear musicals to kids because it can be hard to cast,” said Mr. Powell. “But we thought it would be a good way to get them out and involved with local theatre, while giving them the opportunity to see what’s it like to be in a musical.”
Leading the charge is Chris Merton as Charlie Brown with Katlyn Bell serving as the perfect foil in football scooping Lucy. Andrew Cherry, Laura Power and Melissa Barta complete the ‘human’ ranks as Linus, Sally and Peppermint Patty, respectively. Rounding out the cast is Lisa McCann in the title role and Chanice Bolan as the beagle’s best friend, Woodstock.
The company decided to host the musical this year - the last two years they partnered with the Academy Theatre for Performing Arts - much in part due to the smaller cast.
“It’s perfectly suited for our theatre,” said Mr. Powell, adding the show is also a great way to let people know about the venue.
For many cast members this is their first time on stage and a venue like the Academy Theatre, although an honour to be on a professional stage, can be “daunting”.
“It takes time to develop a theatre voice,” said Mr. Powell, noting, an upside in recent years is the use of microphones have helped address that need to be heard in the balcony.
Tickets for the show, which hits the stage April 18, 19, 25 and 26, as well as May 2 and 3, cost $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets are available from Chesler’s Shoes in the Lindsay Square Mall, at the door or by calling 324-2445.
